  • Messina originally called Zancle, was founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century. The main sights are the Norman Duomo, originally built in the 12th century, it holds an impressive carved altar and a huge inlaid organ; the Bell Tower with the world’s largest astronomical clock in the Piazza del Duomo and the Museo Regionale, where you’ll find an amazing collection of art rescued from the 1908 earthquake, including pieces dating back to the 13th century.

  • Taormina founded in the 4th century BC is nowadays a chic resort town with gorgeous medieval churches and sweeping views over the Naxos Bay and Mount Etna. The most important attraction is the Greek Theatre, situated at the very top of a hill, it was originally built in the Hellenistic era and completely reconstructed by the Romans for gladiatorial shows, you could admire the spectacular view of the Mount Etna and the Calabrian mountains.

  • Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and is situated on the Ionian Sea, under the shadow of Mount Etna. The symbol of the city is u Liotru, or the Fontana dell’Elefante, assembled in 1736 by Giovanni Vaccarini. It portrays an ancient lavic stone elephant topped by an Egyptian obelisk. Don’t miss the stunning Piazza Università, a nerve center made interesting by the facade of a majestic old university building, and the nearby Castello Ursino.
