“The Road of 1,000 Bends” as the Amalfi Coast Drive is sometimes known could also be called “the Road of 1,000 Views”, sprinkled with fascinating and quaint towns.
Amalfi once a maritime power, is today one of Italy’s top tourist destinations. Do not miss the Amalfi’s Cathedral (Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea) or simply Duomo, a church and a gem of Arab-Norman Romanesque architectural style built in Amalfi in 13th century and the Cloister of Paradise to the left of the Duomo, originally a necropolis for members of the Amalfitan “establishment”.
Positano is considered one of the most picturesque of all Italy’s coastal resorts. The town boasts dramatic cliff-hugging roads, popular beachfronts and some of the very best views that you are ever likely to experience. The town does manage to retain elements of its past, such as the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, one of its oldest landmarks, dating back as far as the 10th century.
Somewhat off the beaten track, Ravello is for those who love peace and quiet and stupendous coastal views. Two of Ravello’s architectural highlights are Villa Rufolo famed for the courtyard with double arches and even more for the tropical gardens and Villa Cimbrone with stunning views of the entire Bay of Salerno from the Belvedere dell’Infinito.
